In preparation for Spring, HELM completedĀ an 11-acre prescribed burn on a property last week in Greene County. Prescribed burning is an efficient and cost-effective tool for land management and wildlife habitat, and the many benefits of burning were recently highlighted in a great article by Tee Clarkson in the Richmond Times Dispatch.
The property where we burned is managed almost exclusively for wildlife, and our burn completed parallel goals of clearing early successional growth and prepping the ground to plant alternating strips of soybeans and native warm season grasses. The result should make for a great combination of food source and habitat/cover for wildlife on the farm.
