Boxwoods are an attractive addition to any landscape, and when cared for properly, can be relatively low maintenance. They do, however, require seasonal pruning to maintain and improve the plant’s overall health. Winter months are an ideal time for pruning as the plants are in their most dormant state. Pruning isn’t just for shaping or reducing the size of boxwoods, but also increases airflow and allows sunlight to reach the plant’s interior so they can regrow and revitalize from within.
Not all Boxwoods require annual pruning, but it’s important to establish a schedule to ensure they are getting necessary maintenance every few years (in addition to an Integrated Pest Management plan). This is especially true for larger established Boxwoods, particularly since they are often a focal point of older gardens and landscapes.
